Border Crisis Response

A Border Crisis Response to support shelters housing migrant families & individuals who are navigating lawful immigration processes.

A massive influx of migrants has created a humanitarian crisis at the southern border. While the majority of the migrant population is currently not allowed to begin an immigration process right now, there are a significant number of individuals and families approved by the Department of Homeland Security to pursue a lawful immigration process in the U.S.. Those individuals and families are being held in shelters all along the southern border as they await their lawful processing. (Read Homeland Security Press Release).

Unfortunately, the shelters established to care for those individuals and families are being overwhelmed and there is no current sign of the need subsiding.

With that in mind, YouthWorks and Border Perspective are teaming up to organize Border Crisis Response Teams to serve immediately in migrant shelters at the South Texas Border. Working closely with the shelter staff, Border Perspective has been able to identify tangible ways to mobilize volunteer teams to offer critical relief and we are inviting you to join us in this crisis response.

Here’s a video from Yonathan Moya, founder of Border Perspective, sharing about the need and why we are choosing to respond:

“The crisis at the border is overwhelming. As a Church, we have the opportunity lean in and not look away. The nations are at our borders. How we respond as the Church of Christ is critical. Consider joining us, helping to alleviate the suffering of those at an extreme place of vulnerability.”

Join a Crisis Response Team to Support…

Who can register?

  • Adults 18+.
Given the rather intense situations and topics that volunteers will experience, it’s important that we only mobilize adults for these Crisis Response Teams.

  • Individuals and groups of all sizes and capabilities.
Individuals and groups can register, and no skill set is required. There is so much need that every volunteer at any level of capability will be utilized.

  • COVID Safety Protocols are required and mandatory.
Due to the nature of the work, it is incredibly important that everyone strictly adheres to the COVID safety protocols outlined by the migrant shelters and our local ministry partners. We can go over them with you when you’re ready to register.

What kind of work will we be doing?

  • Volunteer roles and responsibilities will most likely change depending on the needs of the day.
Some of the tasks might include things like:
    • Sorting donations and supplies
    • Packing health care kits
    • Preparing food
    • Distributing clothing, blankets and other essential items
    • Driving migrants to airport
    • Walking migrants to nearby bus station

What is the schedule?

  • Arrive any day and stay for however long you are able.
We can take volunteers immediately and will find ways to plug you in for any length of time that you are able to stay.

  • A daily schedule might change depending on the needs, but here is an example:
    • 8:30 – 12 | Serving at the migrant shelters
    • 12 -12:30 | Lunch provided (brown bag)
    • 12:30 – 4 | Serving at the migrant shelters

What is the cost?

  • $50 per day or $200 per week.
This cost goes to provide critical supplies for our local partners and one brown bag meal a day.

  • Additional donations are welcomed and greatly appreciated.
Any amount above and beyond the costs associated with the daily needs will go to support our local team that will continue to help meet the ongoing needs of the migrant shelters, individuals and families.

  • Things NOT included in the cost are travel/airfare, lodging and any meals outside of the 1 meal per day that we provide.
We can provide you with information about airports, lodging options, and anything else that you might need.

This is a chance for the Church to respond and it is your invitation to be a part of it. Join our Border Crisis Response Team or request a call with one of our staff to learn more.
