Support local urban farmers and social service organizations as they serve under-resourced populations, and learn about the food crisis in Philadelphia.

About Philadelphia

Your group will partner with local youth programming and several social service organizations and urban gardens that are combatting food insecurity. Whether you are planting and weeding at an urban garden, packing boxes at a food distribution center or helping load and unload food deliveries to food pantries, your group will help partners meet the ongoing needs of community members. In the evenings, explore Old Historic City and the Liberty Bell, stroll along the shore of the Delaware River and run up the “Rocky Balboa Steps” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. YouthWorks has been serving in this community since 2004.

Please note: All information regarding service and community engagement activities are subject to change. We are actively working to identify community engagement and service opportunities in consideration of COVID.

Serving in Philadelphia

  • Partner with local organizations to meet ongoing needs in the community.
  • At one or two points in the week, the schedule in Philadelphia differs from the typical YouthWorks schedule to add an intentional learning component surrounding food sustainability and food insecurity in the city.
  • Students will serve part of the week at a food pantry, soup kitchen, children’s program or urban gardening.
  • Groups will need to plan for an additional $5-$15 per vehicle to cover the cost of parking for several Evening Activities. Also plan for additional parking costs at service partners that are located in the downtown area.
  • Youth Programming does not start until the last week of June, service before that point will primarily focus on urban gardening and partnering with other local service organizations.
