ABOUT THE ATLANTIC OCEAN
Florida’s coral reef system extends over 350 miles, from just off the Florida Keys to the St. Lucie Inlet in Martin County. The reefs began forming about 5,000 years ago. Since an individual colony of coral only grow up to 7 inches per year, it takes a long time to grow such an expansive ecosystem! Florida’s reef is home to several different types of coral, some of which is listed on the Endangered Species List, so coral nurseries have been established along Florida’s coast to make sure they are here for years to come.
SERVING IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN
- Partner with local organizations to meet the needs of the reef and nursery.
- Serve through feeding fish, native to the reef.
- Defend the reefs from predators, such as sharks and eels.
COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE
We know you’ve been holding your breath for this underwater missions experience, and it’s finally here! Florida’s coral reef will offer your group a complete underwater experience. You’ll be fully immersed in the local environment, staying in the coral habitats and utilizing the natural offerings throughout the week. Your group will get to know how the nursery protects the reef and steps you can take when you get home to keep protecting the new friends you’ve met throughout the week. You’ll love your footwashing immersion experience – not just your feet, but your hands and your head as well! No scuba experience necessary: we provide all of the oxygen you’ll need for your stay in the reef.
YOUTHWORKS RELATIONSHIP
This is YouthWorks’ first year in the reef community. We are excited about our current housing with a local school of fish. Yea Cod!
