It’s easy to assume we know what others need and make a plan to meet those needs. Too often, however, we forget the important step of listening and, instead, assume we know best. When entering a community on a mission trip, we need to be extra careful to value the community by taking time to listen. Through learning from a community we are also better equipped to meet other real needs rather than only perceived needs.

By the end of this activity your students should be able to see the importance of listening to a community, understand the frustration that can occur in a community that is not listened to or learned from, and enter the mission trip week with an improved attitude toward community interactions centered on listening and learning.
