Overview

Montgomery, Alabama, holds a profound place in American history as both the “Cradle of the Confederacy” and the “Birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement.” It was here that pivotal moments unfolded—such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Selma-to-Montgomery marches—that transformed the fight for racial equality in the United States. Today, the city honors this legacy through landmarks like the Rosa Parks Museum, the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum, and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, inviting visitors to reflect on the nation’s past while envisioning a more just future.

While Montgomery has made strides since the Civil Rights era, it continues to face challenges rooted in racial inequity. Disparities in education, housing, economic opportunity, and food insecurity, disproportionately impacting Black residents and other marginalized groups. Local organizations and churches work tirelessly to address these injustices, yet the need for awareness, advocacy, and action remains urgent. A service-learning trip to Montgomery offers participants the opportunity to connect with this living history, reflect on how faith connects to matters of racial justice, and contribute in meaningful, hands-on ways.
