  Kansas City, Missouri

Grades: 7 to 9

Kansas City is well-known for its parks, architecture, world-class arts and museums. But within this thriving midwestern city, there are those who struggle with poverty. From serving the city’s homeless, to facilitating activities for children and the elderly, there are many ways to shine the light of Christ in this community.

Demographics

Kansas City, located in northwest Missouri, began as a trading post in 1821. Named after the Kansa Indians who inhabited the area, its position on the Missouri River led to trade dominance and also was once one of the world’s major cattle markets. Today, the city is home to over 441,000 residents, making it the 36th largest city in the country and the 13th largest in land area. The city boasts more fountains—over 2,000—than anywhere but Rome and more boulevards than anywhere but Paris. The city also is a hotbed of jazz music and award-winning barbecues. A closer look at this metropolitan community, however, reveals some trouble spots. Federal statistics show 16.5 percent of residents live below the poverty level. Crime also is on the rise statewide, increasing nearly 7 percent in just one year. Community development groups have several initiatives underway to make Kansas City a healthier community, both socially and economically. You can help by serving and ministering to Kansas City residents with the love of Christ.

About the Ministry

Participants serve in a variety of ways during a YouthWorks mission trip. Students may spend all week at one ministry or switch between ministries during the week. Our goal is to partner with local organizations and programs that seek to address the very basic needs of residents. Students may serve at places like: Children’s Programs, Elderly Centers, Soup Kitchens/Homeless Shelters and Thrift Stores. We cannot confirm until all groups arrive exactly what ministries your students will be a part of during the week. We ask that you come with a willing and flexible spirit!

Activities

Evening activities during a YouthWorks week are designed to give participants insight into the lives of local residents and the culture of the area. A list of evening/cultural activities we have done in the past include: go to the Jazz Museum and the National Negro League Museum and attend a community cookout. These are examples of what your group might partake in during your mission week. These examples are subject to change due to weather or availability. In case of change, suitable substitutes will be provided. We try to arrange for free evening activities, but from time to time, an additional cost may be required for an activity. Please plan to bring an additional $10 per person to cover any extra costs. We will confirm the details closer to your trip.
